Wow, this mobile TV thing is catching on fast! Fresh on the heels of Vodafone and Sky's new mobile TV service, Nokia have announced the release of the new Nokia N92 mobile phone, complete with integrated DVB-H for mobile TV. According to Nokia:
"The Nokia N92 is the world's first mobile device with a built-in DVB-H receiver, making it possible for users to watch and record live TV at any time. Based on open standards, DVB-H is the leading mobile-TV broadcasting technology, enabling low-cost delivery of high-quality broadcast programs to mass audiences."
This amazing device offers a host of new features. Best bits include:
- Electronic Service Guide (ESG) contains information about the available TV channels, programs and services.
- Full interactive TV ability
- Supports the new Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, which provides a semi-transparent zoomed-out view of a web page that enables users to quickly orient themselves on a small screen.
- XpressMusic device, with up to 2 GB memory card support, offering storage for up to 1500 songs
- Form factor to die for!
The new Nokia N92 looks an absolute stunner too. Hats off to Nokia, they've really raised the bar this year. First the original N-series line up, with the N90 mobile phone and its impressive features (and cool twisting form factor); the E-series business-oriented phone, with its fantastic connectivity; and now this, more new N-series goodness with the N92. More details after the jump, and more new Nokia phones in later posts too!
Full details on the Nokia N92 mobile TV phone
The Nokia N92 is the world's first mobile device with a built-in DVB-H receiver, making it possible for users to watch and record live TV at any time. Based on open standards, DVB-H is the leading mobile-TV broadcasting technology, enabling low-cost delivery of high-quality broadcast programs to mass audiences.
Note the term
broadcast TV - we're not talking streaming TV here, like
Vodafone and Sky's service, which, because it uses the network to transmit bits relies on users following an 'acceptable use' policy (i.e. you can't use it all day). This is broadcast technology, the same as your TV uses, so you can't overstretch the network. 'Acceptable use' means 24-7! And DVB-H offers up to 50 TV channels with low cost, all over one network.
Users can also set reminders to watch their favorite TV programs, create personal channel lists and subscribe to TV channel packages. You can therefore still be a couch potato whose world is dominated by the TV, but you're no longer restricted to the couch! So, with the Nokia N92 you become a simple potato! Marvellous!
The screen is large and glorious, being a 2.8" anti-glare QVGA screen with 16 million colors.
Tivo-like TV recording
Amazingly, the Nokia N92 even provides limited Tivo-like facilities, with an Electronic Service Guide (ESG) containing information about the available TV channels, programs and services. Other mobile TV features include watching time of up to four hours, recording and 30 seconds replay.
Enhanced usability features

The Nokia N92 supports the new Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, which provides a semi-transparent zoomed-out view of a web page that enables users to quickly orient themselves on a small screen. With an overall view of the web page, users can intuitively navigate to all corners of it as well as see the web page as it was originally designed. I really watn tos ee how well this works, because this could be breakthrough in mobile phone browsing we've been waiting for. No need to reformat a web page - simply zoom into the bits you want to see.
Mobile Music and camera phone features
Of course, the Nokia N92 wouldn't be compete without the usual mobile phone gizmos: the Nokia N92 is also an XpressMusic device, with up to 2 GB memory card support, offering storage for up to 1500 songs delivered through the built-in stereo speakers or a stereo headset. The entertainment experience is further complimented by FM radio with Visual Radio support. Additional Nseries features include 2 megapixel camera for print-quality photos and email attachment support.
Connectivity features
The Nokia N92 also provides a rich range of connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, infrared, Bluetooth wireless technology as well as USB 2.0 (Mass Storage Class), which allows users to connect the Nokia N92 directly to a compatible PC for quick and convenient file transfers or downloads.
The Nokia N92, which is based on S60 3rd Edition and Symbian OS, is planned to be commercially available in mid 2006 in Europe, Africa and Asia, in countries where DVB-H services are available, with an estimated, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 600 euros.
Does it have the wow factor all good gadgets need? Ohmigod yes! I want one, and I want one now! Any chance of a review model, Nokia?!
