Nokia N92 and Nokia N80 remote control media streaming mobile phones

Finally, today, Engadget have a bit of a rant about UPnP (Universal plug n Play) devices, and what they could potentially offer to the humble gadget lover. The new Nokia N92 and Nokia N80 mobile phones both come with UPnP built-in. So what? you may ask. Well, Engadget provides the following tasty little scenario:
“UPnP works on any device with an IP address allowing it to automagically discover, interact, and control other UPnP devices in, say, the digital living room. So imagine coming home and using your 10GB Samsung cellphone or Apple iPhone to stream all your videos, photos, and music over WiFi to your monster 13.1 channel sound system and 80-inch plasma.”

Imagining the mobile phone media streaming scenario
Yes, imagine indeed. Engadget’s rant is focused on the lack of such devices - in other words, the technology’s there to actually do this, but no devices exist to implement it. Until now, of course. The new Nokia N92 and Nokia N80 both have UPnP. It’s therefore only a matter of time (perhaps a month, even!) before all the other handset manufacturers follow suit and also include UPnP in their mobile phones too. Once this becomes ubiquitous across all devices, other gadget manufacturers, such as TV manufacturers, home cinema manufacturers (e.g. Sony, Samsung, LG…hang on, don’t these guys make mobile phones as well?!) will catch on and start including it in their products, and then Engadget’s scenario will come true. So, next summer at the latest then!
This does mean that as well as becoming an MP3 player, digital camera, TV player, radio, web browser and email client, the mobile phone is all set to become a universal remote control and a media streaming/interoperability device. For gadget lovers, a new religion should be built around these things, as they seriously are worth worshipping!
