Samsung Digital camera with mobile TV

Samsung have announced they intend to equip their digital cameras with Mobile TV in a new, and somewhat odd, twist on mobile convergence. Samsung see the digital camera and mobile TV combination as able to compete with mobile phones for space in the user’s pocket.

This is a new one on me.  Mobile TV is one of those pick up and play services - you use it for 5 - 15 mins at a time when you’re bored (say, waiting for a friend, or on the tube). In other words, you need to have it with you all the time in order tog et any sue out of it. Like the Nintendo GameBoy stuck forlornly at the back of your drawer, if it’s not in your pocket, it’s not used. How often is a digital camera always in your pocket? And how often is your mobile phone? It’s worth watching this new strategy of Samsung’s, but I’m not yet convinced.

According to Samsung spokesman Ahn Ji-hoon, “Our DMB cameras will compete against phones as we will arm them with a screen as large as 3 inches diagonally, much larger than today’s DMB phones at about 2.2 inches”

“In addition, our convergence cameras will have the edge in battery life in comparison to cell phones. We expect people will be able to watch TV with DMB cameras for up to three hours on just a one-time charge,” he added.

Another application in the feature-rich cameras is the ability to play movies or other video clips after downloading them from computers, just as personal multimedia players (PMPs) can do.
