I've written before about how to unlock your mobile phone, and how for UK users it's not an issue, as you simply phone up your network operator and tell them you want to switch. However, for other countries, notably the US, things are a little more different. The network operators lock the phones to their network, so that you can only use it on their network and no other. If you want to switch networks, this is intenseley irritating, and means that the network operators have you over a barrel.
Fortunately, there are solutions, one of which is the web-based phone unlocking service provided by UniquePhones.com.

Asus have announced the new Asus Z801, a super cool looking mobile phone with chess-board styled phone keys and Sapphire Quartz mirrored surface. The Z801, although sounding like an old '80s home computer, looks glorious, and comes with 2 megapixel camera, 260k colour QVGA screen, MP3 player, tri-band connectivity, A2DP, and, er, "wisdom voice control" (at least, that's what the translation tells me!) Presumably only the wise can control a phone as good looking as this!

Well here's a piece of news that was entirely unexpected. Gizmodo, who'd set rumours ablaze last week by suggesting that the iPhone would be announced today, have proved to be right - but it's not the Apple iPhone, it's the Linksys iPhone! Turns out Apple never owned the iPhone trademark all along - Cisco did, and have used it on a new Linksys VoIP phone (the much-less-sexy-sounding Linksys Wireless-G WIP320 Phone), which they've announced, yup - today!
This is more like it! No sooner had I posted out of focus leaked photos of the new Sony Ericsson Ai, much better pictures have emerged, showing the Ai in its shiny silver and brooding black finery. The keys are small, the phone is slim, and it looks set to challenge the LG Chocolate in the looks department.
Sony Ericsson have a few designer phones up their sleeves for next year, and although the Ai (or W880i as it might officially be known) is being pitched as a Walkman phone, it's got the looks to be a designer phone in its own right.
More pictures of the Sony Ericsson Ai after the jump.
More leaked pictures, this time from Sony Ericsson. The picture above shows the Sony Ericsson La and Ni (codenames at the moment), a Walkman phone and a CyberShot phone respectively. The Li will apparently be a low-end CyberShot phone, possibly called the Sony Ericsson K650i, and is expected to come with 2 megapixel camera, auto focus, and the same specs as the Sony Ericsson K800.
The Na could be named the Sony Ericsson W650, and is expected to offer similar features to the Li.

My recent post on what mobile phone I bought for my Dad this Christmas has been nicely complemented by Mad4MobilePhones, who've put together a neat list of phones to get for the women in your life.
Obviously, most are pink, as you'd expect, which is a bit disappointing, as I'm sure girls want more form a phone than just pink. Mind you, the girls I know all have pink phones, so what do I know?!

Seems there's a new mobile phone manufacturer in town, and they're gunning for those designer phones that are currently all the rage. Called Neo, the company is showing off its brand new Neo 808i, which is kind of funky looking, featuring a more horizontal approach to mobile phone design, with the keys placed to the right of the screen. I guess this is the innovation now obligatory in all new phones, no matter how unergonomic!

Prototypes

Nokia recently presented a couple of short videos at NokiaWorld 2006 that show off its designs for a fantastic new user interface. The ease with which the user is able to select various items on the screen and push them around with the flick of a finger, sorting and collating as he goes, make you wonder why no-one thought of this type of interface before!
The second video shows a user taking a picture, editing the image, then wrapping the image around the phone's body, effectively taking it from the virtual world to the real world. Not sure how realistic this particular piece of fancy wizardry is, but it's genius design!
