Samsung T709 Wifi mobile phone

Samsung have announced more new phones today than I can possibly blog about. So to help you navigate through their maze of product announcements, here’s a brief overview, some links, press release cuttings, and images.

Mobile TV

Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd., (Samsung) today affirmed its global leadership in the burgeoning mobile TV category by demonstrating several “world’s firsts” among its line-up of nine handsets crossing multiple mobile broadcasting platforms - Satellite DMB (S-DMB), Terrestrial DMB (T-DMB), Media FLO and DVB-H. These various mobile broadcasting standards will bring large-volume multimedia, television and radio content direct to consumers via their mobile handset.

Samsung also will demonstrate for the first time a handset developed for Qualcomm’s MediaFLO mobile broadcasting platform. Beyond its wireless multimedia content capabilities, the handset’s two megapixel camera with integrated flash allows users to capture still images and video, which can then be viewed on the phone’s 262,000-color TFT display, shared with friends via a high-speed data connection or stored on a microSD card in the phone’s external memory slot. Samsung’s iconic swivel screen design will allow users to view streaming video or multicast packet data in landscape mode, further enhancing the multimedia experience.

Samsung HSDPA mobile phone

Samsung reinforces its technology leadership with the world’s first successful demonstration of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology, reaching speeds up to 3.6 Mbps, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Although there have been several demonstrations of speeds up to 1.8 Mbps in the past, Samsung’s demonstration of HSDPA handset speeds of 3.6 Mbps is the industry’s first ever.

Web browsing, as well as streaming and downloading of content, will be demonstrated to compare with speeds of 1.8 Mbps and 384Kbps. Samsung’s 3.6 Mbps HSDPA handset allows users to download content much faster than on WCDMA or GSM/GPRS networks. For example, downloading a 4MB mp3 file takes less than 10 seconds at 3.6Mbps HSDPA.

Samsung’s M8000 WiMAX phone

For the first time in the United States, Samsung demonstrates WiBro (Korean Wireless Broadband) service on one of its world’s first Mobile WiMAX phones, the Samsung M8000. Samsung’s WiBro service demonstration is an exciting precursor to the first commercial service in the Korean market slated for the first half of 2006.

WiBro, a Korean Wireless Broadband service based on the mobile WiMAX technology (IEEE 802.16e TDD OFDMA standard), is a wireless high-speed broadband service able to deliver voice, data and video at speeds of up to 120 km per hour. The Mobile WiMAX technology provides true mobile connectivity by giving users seamless broadband connections anytime, anywhere. Mobile WiMAX’s advantages include a broad range of converged services delivered from a single, IP-based network. Home, business, and vehicular applications include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIp), video telephony, multimedia messaging and conferencing, location and telematic services, broadcast, and multimedia push and demand services. Mobile WiMAX will drive revenue through delivery of broadband services to rural and suburban locations not accessible by current technology as well as creating broadband “hot zones” in more densely populated areas. WiMAX is also capable of delivering access and transport convenience and cost savings through wireless backhaul.

Using its M8000, a smart phone equipped with a QWERTY keypad, Samsung showcases WiBro services available in the Korean market through a series of applications including broadcasting, home networking, video conferencing, video on demand, mobile navigations, and push-to-all (push-to-talk/data/video).

“Samsung is excited to showcase WiBro services on Mobile WiMAX technology, network infrastructure, and devices at CES,” said Kitae Lee, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business. “As a leader in developing Mobile WiMAX globally, Samsung knows the tremendous benefits this technology offers consumers. Our demo at CES is a preview of what we are commercializing in Korea during the first half of this year, and hope to eventually roll out in the U.S.”
