Samsung SCH-B500 7.7 megapixel camera TV phone lays down technology gauntlet

This is the soon-to-be-announced Samsung SCH-B500 camera TV phone. Yes that’s right: not digital camera, but a camera TV phone. All 7.7 megapixels of it. This stunning piece of technological gadgetry knocks most digital cameras out of the water, let alone cameraphones. What’s even more impressive is its range of other features. You want mobile TV on your gigantic cameraphone? You got it. MP3 player and TV-Out? Why not. Super huge screen for watching mobile TV? Oh go on then! This leviathan of a phone is simply staggering, and lays down the technology gauntlet to all other mobile phone manufacturers. Is says quite simply (but also quite loudly): “call that a cameraphone?”

Samsung SCH-B500 super camera TV phone

Words fail me with this phone! Not only does it have mobile TV (DMB format, this being a Korean phone) and a 7.7 megapixel camera, it also has a 3x optical zoom, and is only 0.7 inches thick. Imagine taking this phone out of your pocket and showing off the size of the zoom! Or should that be, imagine taking this camera out of your pocket and then making a call with it? Or taking this TV out of your pocket and taking a picture with it? Whatever, you’d have some serious envy coming your way!
New Korean Phone - or is it?
And yes, it may be new Korean phone, but don’t despair (yet!). Although this isn’t likely to be sold outside of Korea any time soon, I don’t think it will be long before the technology gap between South Korea and the rest of the world begins to close. Nokia is fighting the European corner by refocusing its phones with glorious new features in the form of their cutting-edge N-series phones. OK, the highest resolution sports only 3 megapixels (the Nokia N80), but with Carl Zeiss lenses and mobile TV as well on their latest Nokia N92 phone (and N93?), they’re not that far away.
Other Korean phones on their way to Western markets?
And if you can’t beat them, join them (or at least, open your markets to them!). Another Korean manufacturer, Pantech, aims to push further into Western markets this year, and they too have phones that sport 5 megapixels (the Pantech IM-8600). Not quite the gigantic megapixellage of this new Samsung leviathan, but then the B500 hasn’t been released yet.
Korean readers can probably expect this phone to be released via SK Telecom. All other readers, just hope it comes your way some day!
