3GSM: Samsung shows off 7 mobile TV phones, many destined for Europe
Mobile Phones?

Samsung showed off a host of mobile phones at 3GSM, including seven mobile TV phones, the super-fast SGH-Z560 HSDPA phone, and the SGH-Z160, billed as the world's slimmest 3G phone (9.8mm thick, if you were wondering!). Samsung didn't quite show off as many new mobile phones as they showed off at CES last month, but by far the more interesting thing about these phones is that many of them are heading for Europe. So instead of just drooling from afar at the new Korean phones as they are released, with their 5 megapixel+ cameras and mobile TV, knowing they'll never be released outside of Korea, we now finally get a chance to play with them ourselves. Well, we Europeans do, anyway. No news yet on the US, although Samsung's mobile TV phones do cover Qualcomm's Media FLO mobile TV standard, which is apparently heading your way later in the year.

Samsung mobile TV phones
Samsung showed off no less than 7 mobile TV phones at 3GSM. These have all been seen before in Korea, but Samsung was keen to show how global its ambitions are, as the range covered every mobile TV standard that exists. Better still, they announced that the Samsung SGH-P900 crossbar mobile TV phone is definitely heading for Europe.
The Samsung SGH-P900 currently uses T-DMB, though, which is common in Korea. In Europe, though, we're expecting to use Nokia's DVB-H mobile TV technology (when our regulators can finally be bothered to approve it!). Not wanting to be left out, Samsung also showed of the SGH-P910, which is the same as the SGH-P900, but which uses DVB-H rather than T-DMB. Samsung are obviously keen to cover all bases!
In addition, Samsung also showed off other mobile TV phones, but didn't say whether or not these were heading for Europe. Still, the fact that they were at 3GSM, a global event, bodes well for their release outside of Korea.
The mobile phones on display included the world’s first dual DMB phone (SPH-B4100), the world’s first 5 mega-pixel T-DMB phone (SCH-B380) , the world’s first mobile TV phone with 3D game function (SPH-B3200), and the world’s slimmest mobile TV phone (SCH-B340).
The Dual DMB phone, the B4100, enables consumers to enjoy both S-DMB and T-DMB in one handset. It also has a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) function allowing consumers to view two channels at the same time while watching S-DMB. The B380 has a unique design of swivel rotating LCD with 5 meg-pixel camera providing full advantage of terrestrial DMB service. The B3200 has a merged 3D game function with S-DMB service to enjoy mobile TV and entertainment features together. The B340 comes in 17.3mm with Satellite DMB service, motion recognition function, 2 megapixel camera and all advanced features of a handset.
Of course, these weren't the only Samsung phones on display at 3GSM: not by a long shot! But the rest can wait for another post.
