Sony Ericsson have been rather slow in jumping on the mobile TV bandwagon (at least outside of Japan, anyway). While Nokia, Samsung and LG all shout loudly about their mobile TV phones, with the Korean firms in particular seemingly releasing a new mobile TV phone every week, Sony Ericsson have been quietly assessing the market and keeping their cards very close to their chest.

That's not to say they haven't beeen working on it, however. According to Sony and Ericsson (note: not Sony Ericsson, but the two separate companies Sony and Ericsson), they will shortly be developing software for mobile and broadband TV, but no news yet on a mobile TV handset.

According to Per Nordlof, Ericsson's director of product strategy and portfolio management: "There is a strong confidence between Ericsson and Sony after the success of the handset business and we will work to develop software that connects the gadgets in the home with the outer world."

Which is not exactly an iron-clad commitment to the cause of mobile TV. Both companies think that mobile TV will take off in two years' time, but seem reluctant to develop any handsets capable of supporting the new service just yet.

There was rumour a few months back about a potential Sony Ericsson Wega phone coming out some time in 2007, but other than some fantastic looking Japanese mobile TV phones, it seems Sony Ericsson are still keeping their plans for mobile TV phones tightly under wraps. Which is annoying!
