Asus Z801 mobile phone Asus have announced the new Asus Z801, a super cool looking mobile phone with chess-board styled phone keys and Sapphire Quartz mirrored surface. The Z801, although sounding like an old '80s home computer, looks glorious, and comes with 2 megapixel camera, 260k colour QVGA screen, MP3 player, tri-band connectivity, A2DP, and, er, "wisdom voice control" (at least, that's what the translation tells me!) Presumably only the wise can control a phone as good looking as this!

Asus Z801 mobile phone Adding to the sense of coolness is the classic analogue watch display on the phone's front. Detracting from it, however, is a Karaoke feature! Speak the lyrics to a song as it plays, and the Z801will not only record them, it'll interpret what you say and display the words back to you as you play your tune, letting you sing along in perfect(ish!) harmony. Must be what it means by 'wisdom voice control' - if so, it's a new definition of the term 'wisdom'!

The Z801 comes with 2 megapixel camera with a resolution of 1600 × 1200 pixels, white balance and the usual camera features, plus video camera. It also comes with a dictaphone function, and support for QR Code (below, left), which is a mobile-specific bar code that lets you buy things through your mobile phone.

Not quite sure where this phone is headed, as the BabelFish translation isn't all that clear (though clearer than my Chinese!). Expect it to be a Chinese phone initially, but as it's being pitched as a designer phone, it may be sold in other markets.

Hopefully it'll come to the UK, as the Asus Z801 is a great looking phone, and offers a real alternative to those looking for something a bit different.
