UniquePhones.com phone unlocking service review

I’ve written before about how to unlock your mobile phone, and how for UK users it’s not an issue, as you simply phone up your network operator and tell them you want to switch. However, for other countries, notably the US, things are a little more different. The network operators lock the phones to their network, so that you can only use it on their network and no other. If you want to switch networks, this is intenseley irritating, and means that the network operators have you over a barrel.
Fortunately, there are solutions, one of which is the web-based phone unlocking service provided by UniquePhones.com.
How UniquePhones’ service works
Phones can be unlocked in two ways: either by entering an unlock code, which is obviously easy, or else by connecting your mobile to your PC and letting software do the magic for you. UniquePhones offer both types of unlocking service, with the PC way requiring use of a special cable, and thus obviously costing more than the unlocking code on its own.
Fortunately, most phones can be unlocked with a simple code you type in via your phone’s keypad. This does, however, require you to know what the unlock code actually is, and this is where UniquePhones’ service comes into its own: they provide unlock codes for over 1,500 different mobile phones (for a fee of course!).
The cost of this service is from as little as $3.99, which, if you’re seriously intent on switching, is a marvellously cheap way of giving your old network the flick.
UniquePhones’ web site looks great, with super-easy instructions on how to unlock your phone, a comprehensive list of the phones they support, and even a support forum if you have any queries beforehand.
I’ve not used UniquePhones’ service, so I can’t vouch for it on personal experience, and remember that this is a sponsored post from the company (gotta pay those Christmas bills somehow ;) However, it’s a slick professional service on offer that’s super cheap, they’ve been around since 2002, and I couldn’t find any valid complaints about them on Google. If I lived outside the UK and really needed to switch networks, I’d feel comfortable using their service (after all, I’d only be risking $4!).
