Samsung SGH-P110 mobile phone smartphone from CeBIT 2007

Just when you thought CeBIT was in danger of becoming a mobile phone non-event this year, Samsung have come up trumps, showcasing their new and highly distinctive Samsung SGH-P110 messaging phone.

As you can see, the first thing that jumps out at you is the innovative form factor. The P110 has somewhat of a schizophrenic feel about it, being both a standard (albeit large) clamshell when opened one way, and a more PDA-like smartphone when opened the other way.

More details and pictures of the Samsung SGH-P110 smartphone after the jump.

Samsung have designed the P110 like this in an attempt to nake a smartphone look and act more like a standard mobile phone when used to make calls. Some smartphones (notably Nokia's Communicators) look unwieldy when placed against the ear - Samsung are hoping the clamshell form will make the P9110 look more natural when making calls.

Following on from this thinking is the layout of the keypad of the P9110. When in phone form, the keypad's numbers jump out at you as they're printed in portrait mode. When in smartphone mode, it's the letters that jump out at you, as they're printed in landscape mode (see pic below).

In terms of features, not much is known yet, but the P110 will come with email, instant messaging, Bluetooth 2.0 and speaker phone.

You can always rely on Samsung to spice up an electronics trade fair!
