Google browser edges closer, thanks to LG
I wrote a few days back about Google's plans for a revolutionary mobile browser. Now it seems that Google's plans are starting to take shape, as it's announced a deal with LG that will see Google products and services pre-installed on select LG phones shipped globally.
Although not the Google browser at this stage, this announcement (together with similar partnerships with other handset manufacturers) gives Google a toe-hold on millions of new mobile phones from which it could later introduce a forthcoming browser.
The Google services that will come pre-installed on the LG phones include:
- Google Maps for mobile, an application that enables users to view maps and satellite imagery, find local businesses, and get driving directions
- Gmail for mobile, a Java-based application that brings more speed, convenience and functionality to the mobile Gmail experience
- Blogger Mobile, an application to upload/download images and text to blog from mobile devices (www.blogger.com), keeps avid bloggers upwardly mobile.
Deep Nishar, director of product management at Google, said "We’re pleased to work with LG to make it easier than ever for mobile internet users to have powerful applications and personalized information at their fingertips,” adding that “users around the world now have more options for accessing information while on-the-go through search and Gmail. With applications like Blogger, users are now free to express themselves from wherever they are in the world.”
More interestingly, and prehaps revealing more signs that a Google mobile browser really is on its way, LG stated that "through this new partnership, LG and Google will jointly market LG-Google handsets, then further extending their collaboration to develop digitalized home in the future."
LG will ship at least ten new phones with Google's products on board in 2007, and have plans to continue the partnership for several years to come. It can surely be only a matter of time before a Google Mobile browser is added to the mix.
