Japan's NTT DoCoMo have been gazing into their crystal balls to see what the future of mobile phones will be. Some of the usual stuff is there - remote medical diagnosis via your mobile phone, tight integration with a fully-connected home network that enables you to control your fridge - all the stuff that's been talked about as "the future" for years now, but which is either still "the future", or requires you to be a millionaire to afford it.

However, they do offer some tantalizing new technologies that apparently are just around the corner. Read on to see for yourselves.

What is new is the use of robots. NTT DoCoMo clearly see robot technology making great strides, and mobile phones as being the obvious way to communicate with them when away from the house. They also see full-size holographic imagery taking off, enabling you not just to make video calls on your handset, but to communicate using huge wall-sized 3D projections.

One nice touch is a video NTT DoCoMo did some years ago (bottom video) showing what handsets would be capable of by 2003. Other than the way the handsets look, they were pretty spot on, so if they're just as accurate with "the future", we can expect some pretty amazing leaps forward in technology.

How far into the future must we wait for this? Just three years - NTT DoCoMo reckon it'll all be here by 2010. Roll on the future!
