Sony Ericsson have announced the Sony Ericsson T650 phone. Despite coming with an MP3 player and a decent 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, the T650 doesn't sport either the Walkman or CyberShot brands, as most of the rest of its current phones do.

Instead, its name is derived from a phone of bygone days - the T610 from 2003, to be precise.

Sony Ericsson claims the new T650 "builds on the design heritage of the T610", which is odd, as the T610 was just an ugly old candybar design, whereas the new T650, despite also being a candybar, is actually quite attractive.

Comparing the features of the new T650 with those of the old T610, however, really makes you realise how far mobile phones have come in the four years between the two models.

Sony Ericsson T650 vs the T610

The T650 is a quad-band GSM phone that also supports 3G.
It comes with a 262k colour 1.9" TFT screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, an MP3 player, video calling, streaming and viewing, Bluetooth 2.0, and all the usual gubbins you'd expect from a mid-range phone of 2007.
The old T610 (left), in contrast, was a tri-band phone with a 128 × 160 pixel 65k colour screen, a camera capable of taking pictures at a massive 352 x 288 resolution (compared with the 2048 × 1536 of the T650), and, er, that's about it!
One thing that the T610 and the T650 do have in common, though, is weight - they're both exactly the same at 95gms.

The Sony Ericsson T650 is all about detail. The illumination effects on the keypad and the sides of the phone interact with animations on the screen. As these animations move across the display they set off waves of light around the keypad, which stand-out against the reflective stainless steel finish.
