Samsung SGH-G600 mobile phone with 5 megapixels
Samsung are about to launch the Samsung SGH-G600, a new Ultra mobile phone that sports a 5 megapixel camera. Phones with 5 megapixels cameras seem to be the current trend at the moment, with Sony Ericsson releasing its Sony Ericsson K850i very soon, and Nokia having had its 5 megapixel N95 on sale for a few months now.

Of course, 5 megapixel cameras are nothing new – LG released the LG KG920 almost a year ago, while Samsung launched their 10 megapixel Samsung B600 in Korea last year – but the difference this year is that the cameras in the phones are actually taking good pictures.

Before this year, megapixel count was all that mattered. However, a 5 megapixel camera without autofocus (such as the LG) is useless, and is only any good as a marketing exercise – in other words, it sounds great on the box, but the resultant pictures are awful.

This year, however, things have changed, as phone manufacturers have started adding all sorts digital camera-related features to improve the pictures. Features such as red eye reduction, autofocus, adjustable ISO settings and even image stabilization software, all help greatly improve the quality of the photos that are taken.

Both the Sony Ericsson K850i and Nokia N95 have these features in spades. There’s no news yet, though, on what the Samsung G600 will offer. Samsung have a lot of experience in the digital camera market, so there’s every chance that their G600 will come with the approriate features necessary for it to take on Sony Ericsson’s CyberShot range. Until we know for sure, though, we don’t know whether the G600 will be a genuine competitor to the K850i and the Nokia N95, or whether it’ll just be another marketing exercise.

What we do know is that the Samsung G600 will come with 3G, USB, Bluetooth 2.0, a 2.3-inch TFT QVGA display and a microSD memory card slot. Being a Samsung Ultra phone, it’s also ultra slim, at just 14.9mm thick (roughly the same width as the original RAZR).

More details on the Samsung G600 when we get it.
