Vodafone opts for Samsung F700 over iPhone

Rumour has it that Vodafone Germany has opted to push the forthcoming Samsung F700 smartphone over the iPhone. Well, I say opted, it didn't really have much choice, as it didn't get the iPhone contract. However, it's a real boost for Samsung, whose all-singing all-touchscreening F700 is aimed squarely at the iPhone.
More details after the jump.

The iPhone lets itself down in the areas you'd expect Samsung to shine, and the Samsung F700 doesn't disappoint. Where the iPhone only has GSM and EDGE, the F700 adds screaming 3.6Mbps HSDPA. The iPhone's camera is only a poor 2 megapixels, whereas the F700's is a whopping 5 megapixel monster.
And despite being an iPod with phone features, the iPhone is inevitably shackled to iTunes, whereas the F700 not only has no such restrictions, it also has loads more codecs, enabling it to play tunes in a variety of different formats.

In short, on paper at least, the Samsung F700 is by far the better smartphone - it even has a proper QWERTY keyboard. All we have to do now is wait and see how good it is in real life, and see whether its drag and drop touchscreen interface is a match for the iPhone's, whose interface is, let's face it, it's killer app.
We should find out soon, as both the European iPhone and the Samsung F700 are heading our way before Christmas.
