Samsung mobile phone powered by a micro-fuel cell
Samsung have announced a breakthrough in micro-fuel cells, and have developed a prototype of a mobile phone powered by their new micro-fuel cell that gets its power from humble water.

The new micro-fuel cell extracts hydrogen from the water and converts it to 3W of energy in order to power the handset.

"When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas," explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' research center. "The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power." Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung's needs only water.

The new micro-fuel cell could be ready as early as 2010 and will provide up to ten hours of power.
