Samsung joins Nokia in the GPS market

Not content with letting Nokia grab all the GPS market all to itself, Samsung is the latest manufacturer to launch its own GPS phone. The new Samsung i550 features a GPS receiver, as well as dedicated GPS buttons on the phone's front keypad, turning the i550 into a car-based Sat-Nav or personal navigation device at the touch of a button.
The phone itself isn't bad, either!

Samsung i550 GPS phone

The Sat-Nav features of the Samsung i550 GPS phone are covered nicely in FinderMentalism. As far as the mobile phone features are concerned, well, things aren't exactly looking too shabby here! For a start, Samsung have had the good sense to include HSDPA, giving download speeds of 3.6Mbps. This also reflects the phone's status as a higher end model, as 3G has now been relegated to the mid-level phones these days.
You also get an FM radio, Bluetooth, 2.6" screen, 128MB of RAM and an impressive 3.2 megapixel camera.
Based on Symbian Series 60, the Samsung i550 also features Samsung's cool new user interface. Not as cool as Nokia's S60 Touch, but given that that's an open S60 add-on, it should be compatible with it, so you might see it installable on the i550 very soon.
Not sure how well the i550 stacks up against the Nokia N95, but it's good to see another mobile phone company entering the GPS phone market, and it seems to validate Nokia's decision to push into that space, if nothing else.
