Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 smartphone

Sony Ericsson have been a bit promiscuous with their smartphones. They started off using the Symbian platform, moved over UIQ (which is a user interface layer on top of Symbian), and then recently moved again to Microsoft's Windows Mobile with the forthcoming XPERIA X1, which they've also created a brand new user interface for.

Now it seems that they're actively looking at the brand new Google Android platform for their future smartphones.

According to no less a source than Reuters, Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson, said that the company is “certainly interested” in the Android platform and that Sony Ericsson should “look at this application”.

Although not stating explicitly that a Sony Ericsson Android phone is in the works, he did say that they're “studying the opportunity”, but is “not in a position to do this at the moment”.

In other words, their current licensing deals with Symbian and Microsoft preclude them from using Android, and no doubt their budget won't stretch to developing a smartphone on a third platform just yet, certainly not after they've finished building the XPERIA.

But if they were going to build a whole new smartphone all over again, it'd be Android based.

XPERIA is going to be the start of a whole new range of smartphones from Sony Ericsson, so we can expect to see the XPERIA X2 sometime next year. This too will more than likely be based on Windows Mobile, as it'll currently be quite a way into its development cycle, but don't count out an XPERIA X3 being Android based at the end of 2009.

Yet more Android news to make Apple quake, even if only ever so slightly!
