Toshiba TG01 offers largest screen and fastest processor of any smartphone
Toshiba seem to have learned from the mistakes they made with the Toshiba G910 smartphone, and have come up with the Toshiba TG01, a brand new smartphone that does all the things the G910 never did.
It’s got the usual set of features that you’d expect of a smartphone – GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel camera, etc. But you had most of these features with the G910. With Toshiba’s old model, though, the performance of the device was so dire that it rendered every single feature it had utterly useless.
Not so the new TG01. In fact, such is the power of Toshiba’s new beauty, it’s just set the benchmark for every other smartphone to beat.

Toshiba TG01 Preview
The Toshiba TG01 looks at first glance like an iPhone, with the now-obligatory touchscreen user interface covering the entire front of this smartphone. As you can see from the pics, it’s not a small screen, either. In fact, at 4.1″, it’s the largest screen on a smartphone on the market, and should make both watching video (the TG01 supports a plethora of video formats, including DivX and even HD video) and browsing the Web a real pleasure.
Despite the huge size of the screen, the TG01 isn’t a huge phone. Sure, its width and height aren’t small, but it’s only 9.9mm thin, so it won’t make a huge bulge in your pocket.
Best of all, though, is the processor speed. The TG01 comes equipped with the latest, and blisteringly fast, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which runs at 1Ghz. This alone should overcome many of the drawbacks of the old G910, which was that it was impossibly slow.
The other thing Toshiba has done with the TG01 is to create a new user interface. The TG01 use Windows Mobile like the G910, but whereas the G910 used Windows Mobile’s default (and horrendous) user interface, the TG01 sports a brand new design, built from the ground up by Toshiba.
From Pocket Lint’s video of the TG01 in action, it looks far more responsive than the old G910, which, combined with the super-fast performance of the Snapdragon chip, should mean that the TG01 isn’t just usable, it’ll out-perform any other phone on the market today.
Whether it does or not, of course, we’ll have to see, but it looks impressive so far!
The Toshiba TG01 will be out in the summer. With the market becoming saturated on an almost daily basis with new smartphones appearing out of the woodwork, it’s got a tough time on its hands, but it’s certainly got the power to become the new champion of Windows Mobile phones – if it operates as well as the specs suggest it should.
I don’t think Apple, Google or even Palm have anything to worry about with the TG01, but other Windows Mobile phones, such as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, could take a real battering from Toshiba’s new baby.
