5 super-fast Toshiba smartphones leaked

One of the surprises of this year’s Mobile World Congress even was Toshiba’s TG01 smartphone. Not only did it feature an innovative new user interface, it also ran on the brand new Windows Mobile 6.5 and came with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, making it the fastest smartphone on the market.
Well, it seems Toshiba are not happy on resting on their laurels, and so are busy working on another five new smartphones, each of which feature the same 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and many of which are even more fully featured than the original TG01.
Full details of Toshiba’s new smartphones after the jump.
Toshiba TG02

First up is the Toshiba TG02. Not only do you get the 1GHz processor, you also get a 4.1″ screen (same as the TG01), built-in aGPS, HSDPA – and waterproofness!
Seems Toshiba have identified a niche in the market – those people who “…want to use the device without worry about a rain, snow and a splash”!
In all respects then, the TG02 is the same as the TG01, but you can use it outside in the UK (i.e. in wet weather!)
Toshiba TG03

The TG03 is more of a multimedia feature-phone than the TG01. Sporting the same screen, processor and other internals, the TG03 also comes equipped with a bigger camera (5 megapixels), video recording, smooth video uploading and 5.1 surround sound.
Toshiba K01 and K02

The Toshiba K01 (top pic) and K02 (above) are nearly identical to the TG01 in terms of features, but they come with different form factors.
Both have QWERTY keyboards and so are meant for people who do a lot of messaging, but whereas the K01 comes with the same 4.1″ screen as the TG phones, the K02 only has a 3.5″ touchscreen.
Toshiba L01

Finally, we have the Toshiba L01. Again coming with the same features as the TG01, what makes the L01 special is its unique form factor. Unique in the sense that it’s not actually a phone rather, it’s much more of a netbook, with a detachable QWERTY keyboard and a 7″ screen. It’s at this level that the distinction between the smartphone and the netbook really starts to blur.
Indeed, as mobile processor technology reaches the level needed for Web-based work (1GHz), and more and more computing services migrate into the cloud, the concept of having one device to access your information is becoming more and more archaic. We need access to our info, but we don’t care what device we use to access it. So it makes sense to use a desktop at work, a smartphone when we’re out and about, and either a netbook or something like the L01 when we’re sat at home watching the TV.
Or that’s what Toshiba’s hoping anyway!
The TG02, TG03, K01 and K02 release date is set for Q4 2009, while we’ll have to wait for early 2010 before we see the Toshiba L01.
