Just hours before the new Apple iPhone is due to be announced (assuming the rumours are true, that is!), details and pics of the new phone have been leaked all over the Web.

Well, I say leaked – it’s only a leak if these things are true, otherwise it’s just mad ramblings from an overexcited Apple fan-boy!

The fan-boy in question, though, John Gruber, has been right before, and what he says makes a lot of sense.

So read on for more details of the new Apple iPhone 3GS that should be announced in the next few hours (tip: don’t get too excited!)

According to Gruber, the new iPhone that will be announced will be called the iPhone 3GS. This isn’t particularly exciting as names go, but then the phone itself won’t be that exciting. Indeed, the most significant difference will be upgrade of the camera from its current 2005 spec of 2 megapixels to the more 2006 spec of 3.2 megapixels. Gosh.

There will also be the addition of a video camera (yes, the iPhone has never previously had a video camera before!), as well as auto-focus, twice as much RAM, a battery life that’s 20% better, twice the storage and a speedier CPU.

Other additions include a magnetometer to power an on-board compass, and possibly a frotn facing video camera (you know, the one that other mobile phones have had since 2002).

In other words, nothing exactly worth writing home about.

However, before we all get too down, just remember that the iPhone was never about features – it was always about a user experience that was literally second to none and which completely changed the game in the mobile phone world.

Whether Apple has anything new up its sleeves as far as the user experience is concerned, we’ll know in just a few hours or so. I hope so, though, otherwise this will be one Apple Developer’s conference that Steve Jobs really should have stayed at home for!
