Apple iPhone
Here we go – the announcement from Apple of the new Apple iPhone, live from Apple WWDC conference (via Gizmodo and Twitter – I’m not actually in San Francisco, worse luck!). Not expecting much, but we’ll see what’s on offer.

Apple have opened by saying that some 40,000,000 iPhone and iPod Touches have been sold. That’s a huge number! They’re pushing the iPhone as a games machine big time. I suspect Nintendo won’t be too worried, but Sony certainly will.

It’s got cut and paste and – wait for it – MMS! Lol! Two years in production and it’s only released MMS. As I suspected, this doesn’t sound like too much of a new phone – more just an incremental update.

More details after the jump (keep refreshing to see more – I’m writing this as you’re reading!)
New Apple iPhone
You can, apparently, download even more stuff over the air from iTunes, including games and movies as well as tunes. There’s support for tethering (letting you hook your Mac or PC up to the iPhone, which effectively then acts as a modem) and HTTP streaming audio and video support.

Hmmm, interesting, there’s support for HTML 5. More and more companies seem to be supporting this, despite the fact it’s anything but a standard. Still, nice to see HTML finally moving on after the 11 year old HTML 4.1!

There’s an interesting new security feature called “find my iPhone”, which will show you where your iPhone is on a map. Typical of Apple, though, you can only access it through its MobileMe service. Why? I mean, seriously, you only need the phone’s co-ordinates. Why force us to view it through an Apple app? It’s this kind of hideous 20th Century focus on locking the user in to Apple, Apple, Apple, that put me off getting an iPhone in the first place.

I’m ranting aren’t I! Sorry, on with the presentation…

Third Generation iPhone's security
Oh no wait, this is good. You can call your phone if you’ve lost it, and it’ll display a giant “help I’m lost!” message. You can also wipe it remotely, which should save loads of embarrassing incidents from UK Government officials!!

Apple seem to have opened up the architecture bit, giving app developers access to all its internal features, not just those Apple deigns to leave open. This is presumably in response to the challenge from Android, which is open out of the box.

There’s also support for Push notification – you know, just like on Android!

iPhone and your medical history

Another interesting feature is how Apple’s push feature can be used for medical software. A patient’s blood glucose levels or even EKG, for example, can be pushed in real time to a Doctor. Now this is an innovative new feature and could open up a whole new market for Apple.

Apple iPhone and Tom Tom

Apple iPhone with Tom Tom
Tom Tom seem to have been busy with the iPhone. They’ve developed a turn by turn navigational app for it, and will let the iPhone interface with its existing Sat Nav devices.

There’s also an ungainly looking dock that holds your iPhone while using it as a Sat Nav and also keeps it charged.

iPhone OS3.0 release date and pricing

iPhone OS 3.0 will be available on June 17th, apparently. Free to all iPhone users and $9.99 to iPod Touch owners (no idea why they have to pay).
