The best camera phones of 2009 – and one winner
Choosing the best camera phone is a nightmare as there are so many to choose from. In fact, 2009 was a bumper year for camera phones, with 5 megapixels now the norm, 8 megapixels becoming increasingly popular, and Sony Ericsson and Samsung raising the bar still further with their 12 megapixel monsters.
To help make your task easier, we’ve rounded up the best camera phones of 2009 for you, and even picked a winner (actually, 3 winners, but who’s counting?!).
If you’re not convinced by our choice, check out our guide on the six essential camera phone features to look out for to ensure you get the best one for your money.
Samsung G800 stars in German opera
Samsung have come up with a somewhat bizarre way to promote their latest camera phone, the glorious Samsung G800. They’ve somehow managed to get it top billing in the German opera “Wagners Nibelungenring for children”, in which the 5 megapixel 3x optical zoom camera phone is used to take a picture of Bruennhilde, which is then shown to Siegfried, making it “essential for the progression of the story”.
Er, quite! Now normally this wouldn’t be such great news, and would just be seen as a lame attempt to bring an existing opera up to date using “modern technology” that the kids use! However, Samsung are making a big deal of it, and have even got it mentioned in the official casting list, which the actual human cast must have been thrilled with!
Oh well, whatever sells your camera phones, I guess!

Which camera phone takes the best low-light pictures?
Camera phones are notorious for taking extremely poor pictures in low light conditions due to the weak nature of the LED flashes that they use. Recently, however, new technologies have emerged that produce superior low light performance without compromising the camera phone’s battery. Both Xenon flashes and new high current LED flashes are capable of taking much better pictures in the dark than the traditional low power LED flashes of old.
But how much better are they? Can a camera phone really take good pictures in low light conditions? And which camera phones are best at taking low light pictures?
This article compares a variety of camera phone flash technologies, and identifies the camera phones that are best at taking low light pictures.

Sony Ericsson rules Flickr
Flickr have released some interesting stats showing, amongst other things, which are the most popular camera phones its users use to upload their camera phone pics. As you can see from the graph, the top five are dominated by Sony Ericsson and Nokia, with the Sony Ericsson K750i coming out consistently on top.
What’s interesting is that all the top 5 are not necessarily the most popular camera phones, but all are capable of taking good quality pics, meaning picture quality means more to your average flickr user’s choice of mobile phone than any other feature. So if you want a decent quality camera phone this Christmas, just follow the flickrers!
