Pictures of the mighty Samsung SCH-B450 3D gaming phone

Samsung have announced the new Samsung SCH-B450 ‘free-folder’ phone. The SCH-B450 is another of Samsung’s high-end technological marvels that certainly has the wow factor. The first thing that grabs your eye is the form factor of the phone. The term ‘free folder’ coomes from the 180 degree swivelling design, which lets you use the phone in clamshell form, or swivel it round to play games. But it’s not just the form factor that’s impressive – in typical Samsung form, the SCH-B450 is packed to the gills with features.

Mobile TV disappoints at World Cup

Mobile TV is being trialled in earnest at the World Cup with a variety of vendors trying out different solutions and technologies to see which works best in a live setting, and what needs to be done to improve the experience. According to Juno Yoshida of EETimes, though, an awful lot still needs to be done if Mobile TV is even to approach an entertaining experience.

Pictures of Virgin Mobile’s Mobile TV phone

Virgin Mobile will become the first operator in Europe to launch a Mobile TV service this year. The service will be based on DAB rather than the mobile TV formats pushed by the handset manufacturers (principally Nokia’s DVB-H, which is set to become the European standard). Users of the service will be able to watch mobile TV on Virgin’s new mobile TV phone, the Trilogy, which was developed for the operator by BT, TTP and HTC.

More Korean mobile TV phones heading for Europe

New Korean phones always raise a stir, as the technology packed inside them is normally a good 18 months ahead of, well, everywhere else! Recently, however, an increasing number of Korean phones are making their way outside of Korea, and heading to Europe. Glorious! Continuing this trend is LG, who announced at 3GSM that the LG V9000 mobile TV phone with marvellous swivelling form factor will be heading to Europe later in 2006. And, just like Samsung, they’re keeping their options open with regards to the mobile TV technology to use. The LG V9000 uses them all (T-DMB, Media FLO, and DVB-H, though not simultaneously).

3GSM: Samsung shows off 7 mobile TV phones, many destined for Europe

Samsung showed off a host of mobile phones at 3GSM, including seven mobile TV phones, the super-fast SGH-Z560 HSDPA phone, and the SGH-Z160, billed as the world’s slimmest 3G phone (9.8mm thick, if you were wondering!). Samsung didn’t quite show off as many new mobile phones as they showed off at CES last month, but by far the more interesting thing about these phones is that many of them are heading for Europe.  So instead of just drooling from afar at the new Korean phones as they are released, with their 5 megapixel+ cameras and mobile TV, knowing they’ll never be released outside of Korea, we now finally get a chance to play with them ourselves. Well, we Europeans do, anyway. No news yet on the US, although Samsung’s mobile TV phones do cover Qualcomm’s Media FLO mobile TV standard, which is apparently heading your way later in the year.

Which mobile TV technology should you choose?

Nokia N92 Mobile TV mobile phone
Choosing the best mobile TV technology may be more tricky than you’d think.  With the mobile phone industry betting its collective cash on Mobile TV for 2006, there are a bewildering variety of competing standards that can be used to receive your favourite TV programmes.  Which standard you choose will depend on the mobile phone handset you buy, as well as the mobile network operator you subscribe to, as different handsets and operators support different standards.

In  Europe, we have two broadcast standards, DVB-H and DAB, as well as mobile TV delivery over existing 3G networks.  In Asia, DMB is popular, most prominently supported in Korea. As a user, choosing the correct standard is crucial if you want to watch the programmes you want on your chosen handset. Choose the wrong technology, and you may find yourself with a mobile TV phone that can’t receive any TV programmes.  So which mobile TV technology should you bet your money on? Read on…!

Samsung target the SGH-P900 crossbar mobile TV phone at Europe

Samsung have announced they’re going to sell the new Samsung SGH-P900 mobile TV phone in Europe. Already on sale in South Korea, the SGH-P900 has an innovative ‘crossbar’ design, whereby the screen twists to landscape mode when viewing TV programmes.  As far as Europe is concerned, though, it’ll be the first T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Mobile Broadcasting) phone, and will be launched in time for the FIFA World Cup.

This phone really is the business, offering not just mobile TV, but a fully-loaded set of multimedia features. 2 megapixel camera, TV out, record and playback TV programmes, it’s got the lot. And to see it being sold outside of Korea and in Europe is fantastic news.  Maybe the technology gap between Korea and the rest of the world is slowly starting to close (at least a little).

Samsung will officially reveal the phone at next week’s 3GSM, so keep reading our coverage of 3GSM for more details.  In the meantime, read more and see more pictures of the Samsung SGH-P900 mobile TV phone after the jump.
