Nokia goes all creative on us

Nokia Acibo concept mobile phone

Nokia have gone all conceptual on us, showing off a variety of new prototype form factors designed to show us how imaginative the company’s designers are. Think of them as the mobile equivalent of car prototypes.

The Acibo is a ‘buddy device’, one of those market-speak terms designed to inspire nothing but horror in the average human. Apparently, “the coveted Nokia Acibo concept has taken surpassed conventional wisdom and created a new buddy device that not only understands and delivers on your communication needs, but offers a unique level of personalization.” Which means it’s a mobile phone in the shape of a ball (wow, I’m getting cynical these days!).

The Aki wristphone is a bracelet phone (or according to Nokia-speak, a ‘wrist-wrap device’!). Apparently, it’s designed to respond to a user’s wrist actions. You move in a particular way, and it’ll perform some function that you’ve programmed into it. So, call your boss by making an interesting but vigorous shake of the wrist – nice one, Nokia!

Nokia have provided an irritating flash site to show off these designs, but to be honest, the navigation is so poor and the usability of the site so irritating, I gave up, and simply read the PhoneMag’s coverage of it! See and be amused!

Samsung and Bang and Olufsen present The Serene (no, really!)

Samsung Bang and Olufsen Serene mobile phone

Samsung has released pictures of its new phone developed in collaboration with Bang and Olufsen. Called the ‘Serene’ (yes, ‘cos that’s exactly how mobile phones make you feel!), it’s designed to compete with Nokia’s Vertue: that is, very expensive, style heavy, feature light. Apparently it does have ‘perhaps the best sound quality in the mobile phone market’ which you can try out for yourself at serenemobile.com, but to be honest, you can’t really tell all that much from the chime of a single bell (though it did annoy the hell out of my cat – not sure if that’s a feature though!)

The phone will be out in November, but there’s already a comprehensive review at mobile-review.com. They conclude much as I suspected:

“This device is extremely uninteresting for people using other functions besides calls. Principally Java support is absent….Some times the phone looks extremely archaic – the manufacturer cut everything they could. In the end we have a device that will be interesting to people who got used to showing their status with such devices not bothering about their functionality and any application to real use.”

In other words: avoid!

The Motorola V3X – an updated RAZR, at last!

Motorola RAZR VX3

Motorola has finally gotten around to updating the RAZR. The original RAZR, remember, had a glorious form factor, looking seriously cool as one of (if not the) thinnest mobile handsets around, but it was always let down by its poor features – in particular, a measly 0.3 megapixel camera. Now, Motorola have put that right. The new RAZR V3X offers not one, but two cameras: the original VGA camera for 2-way video calling, and a new 2 megapixel camera for taking actual pictures with. At last, a RAZR that can finally be used for more than just phone calls! The rest of the features are pretty standard fare now, and are listed over the link.

Nokia 3250 twisting mobile music phone

Nokia 3250 twisting music mobile phone
Hot on the heels of delaying the much-hyped, mobsharing potential of the wi-fi-enabled N91, Nokia have announced another mobile-music phone that’s actually very similar to its delayed sibling.  The Nokia 3250 isn’t an N-series phone, so isn’t meant to be as sexy, and it doesn’t have wi-fi enabled, so no mob-sharing potential – but it does twist! Again with the wow factor, this phone makes up for the lack of wi-fi with a seriously cool form factor, twisting to reveal a different set of keys. One set are what you’d expect in a mobile phone (numbers, etc.); the other are music-specific, enabling you to play your tunes, fast-forward, rewind, and generally hunt around for what you’re looking for without having to remember some arcane key combination or make out any extremely small blurry text that would normally indicate the music functions.

Actually, the twisting seems to be a bit of a gimmick, but it’s certainly one that works with me, shallow cool-feature-loving man that I am.  Initially the phone presents itself as a standard candy-bar design, with normal numeric keys at the bottom.  But wait – twist those buttons 180 degrees, and a new set appear, giving you non-standard, novel music-specific buttons. “Wow!” cry your mates! Yes, ok it’s definitely a gimmick, but be honest, what’s going to look better – a SonyEricsson W800i Walkman phone with a ‘Walkman’ sticker on it; a Motorola ROKR with an iTtunes sticker on it; or this, a Nokia 3250 with a bit that twists in a really cool way. Brands are cool, but twisty bits are so much cooler!

Other features include:
  • Stores up to 1 Gigabyte (750 songs) of high quality music and offers 10 hours of music play.
  • Two-megapixel camera and smartphone capabilities.
  • Triband GSM 900/1800/1900
It’s expected to start shipping in the first quarter 2006 with an estimated retail price of 350 EUR before subsidies or taxes.

NEC ultra-thin mobile phone – makes RAZR look LRDY

NEC L1 Ultra-thin mobile phone
NEC Corporation has announced what it claims is the world’s thinnest mobile phone with 1.3 mega-pixel camera.  Making Motorola’s RAZR look a bit lardy, the L1 is only 47.9mm (width) x 101.5mm (height) x 11.9mm (depth; when folded), and weighs a meagre 96g. Supporting mobile-internet and GSM/GPRS, it is equipped with a 1.9 inch (176~220 dot) 65,000 color display, 1.3 megapixel camera, PictBridge, MP3, Java and Bluetooth.

I know there are more feature-packed phones on the market, but somehow these ultra-thin variants really have the wow factor.  It’s the type of phone you’d be happy to take out of your pocket, safe in the knowledge that your mates will go “wow!”…well, maybe not ‘wow’, but their own exclamation of impressedness anyway. Same it’s not available in the UK (yet).

Nokia N70 3G smartphone starts shipping

Nokia N70 3G smartphone
Nokia has begun shipping the N70, a 3G smartphone with 2 megapixel camera, flash and front camera for video calling.  The N70 is one of Nokia’s new high-end N-serries phones that are packed with features, and in my opinion, mark Nokia’s return to the top of the must-have mobile gadgets.

It’s less sexy than its sablemates, the N90 and N71, but it’s still feature packed.  I particularly like the embedded email configuration tool that helps users set up their preferred mobile email settings. Once set up, the user will get notification of new email and can then log on to retrieve it.

Other features include a digital music player and FM radio with support for Visual Radio, and the ability to plug the thing into a compatible home stereo system for stereo playback or recording.  In addition, the Nokia N70 is among the first Nokia devices to include the Catalogs Client mobile shopping application, making it easy for users to quickly discover, trial, download and purchase new applications, services and content designed for the Nokia N70.

UK Mobile TV trial with Nokia, O2 and NTL

Told you you were going to be hearing a lot more about Mobile TV.  According to Nokia:

In a UK first, EastEnders, Coronation Street, CSI and Lost are just some of the TV programmes up to 400 O2 customers, living and working in Oxford, will be able to watch live on an advanced mobile phone from next week.

O2 and Arqiva (previously known as NTL Broadcast) have teamed up with Nokia as well as the leading terrestrial and satellite broadcasters to kick-off the UK’s first trial of full multi-channel mobile TV. 16 channels are being offered to O2 customers, including BBC ONE, BBC TWO, BBC News 24, ITV 1, ITV 2, Channel 4 and Five, which will provide a core of mainstream channels coupled with programmes from British Eurosport, Cartoon Network, CNN, Discovery Channel, MTV, ShortsTV, Sky News, Sky Sports News and Sky Travel.

Customers will be able to select their favourite programme from an on-screen service guide, search for specific items as well as set their handset to alert them when a show starts. The trial will run for up to six months and is designed to test and showcase the televisual capabilities of the next generation mobile services. It will look at how people choose to catch up on their favourite TV shows, how they watch the latest music videos and keep up to date with the news and sport when on the move, and provide an understanding of how much customers are willing to pay for the service.

Sharp 903 mobile phone – Now 3 megapixel camera phones are let loose!

Sharp 903 mobile camera phone with 3 megapixels

Mobile phone technology’s moving on again :) Sharp have just released the new THREE MEGAPIXEL Sharp 903 3G phone. According to Sharp, it boasts improved functionality, superb ease-of-use and a smart design. With features like a 3.2-Megapixel CCD camera, built-in music player and the ability to stream and download video clips, it offers advanced entertainment functions that can replace your digital camera or multimediaplayer. The Sharp 903 makes the most of the rich entertainment and advanced usability that’s only possible with 3G (UMTS).

Looks great, too – although I am a sucker for odd twisting designs. Three megapixel camera, though – now that’s worth having! Should be out now on Vodafone. Full specs provided after the link…

Nokia sells its 1 billionth mobile phone

Nokia factory producing 1 billion mobile phones

September 5th was the day in which the world saw its two billionth mobile phone subscriber.  Now Nokia claims it has just sold its one billionth phone to the market, meaning one in every two phones out there are Nokias.  This is quite an accomplishment, but some of the figures underlying that success are even more amazing…

BBC releases Dr Who and Red Dwarf for Mobile Phones

The BBC has announced that it’s releasing some of its content for full-length full-screen play on mobile phones.  Select episodes of Doctor Who and Red Dwarf are the first to be provided with more to come in the near future.

The content is being provided in conjunction with ROK Player, who sell content on MMC (MultiMediaCard) cards that are, according to the company, “DVDs for the mobile”.  In actuality, they’re small, easily-losable cards that are only compatible with a limited number of phones (currently mostly Nokia). On sale shortly and priced at around £17.00, the co-branded Digital Video Chips (DVC™) will be available from Nokia stores and Choices Video, with direct sales and retail via www.rokplayer.com.

It’s an interesting alternative to the Mobile TV concept I talked about yesterday, but £17 strikes me as too expensive, and I think they’re a company focusing on a niche that’s got maybe 6 months’ worth of life left.  Once Mobile TV is introduced, who’d pay £17 for an MMC card? It’ll be interesting to see the company’s plans this time next year.
