New Apple iPhone finally announced

Here we go – the announcement from Apple of the new Apple iPhone, live from Apple WWDC conference (via Gizmodo and Twitter – I’m not actually in San Francisco, worse luck!). Not expecting much, but we’ll see what’s on offer.

Apple have opened by saying that some 40,000,000 iPhone and iPod Touches have been sold. That’s a huge number! They’re pushing the iPhone as a games machine big time. I suspect Nintendo won’t be too worried, but Sony certainly will.

It’s got cut and paste and – wait for it – MMS! Lol! Two years in production and it’s only released MMS. As I suspected, this doesn’t sound like too much of a new phone – more just an incremental update.

More details after the jump (keep refreshing to see more – I’m writing this as you’re reading!)

O2 drops the iPhone

Just when you thought the Apple iPhone hype had died down, we have surprising news that there are no more 8GB iPhones on sale in the UK. Carphone Warehouse has completely run out of stock, all online stores are telling their affiliates not to promote it anymore (no point, really, as there aren’t any to sell!), O2 only have a few more left in their stores, and no more additional stock is expected. What’s going on? Is this the end of the iPhone in the UK?…

Apple announces UK iPhone

Apple has finally announced the release date for the UK Apple iPhone. It will be coming out on 9th November, will be carried by O2, sold via O2, Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores on an 18 month contract, and the 8GB model will cost £269 (or £69 more than it costs in the US).

Despite rumours suggesting the UK iPhone will come with 3G, in fact it won’t – it’s the same iPhone sold in the US, with just EDGE mobile connectivity.

To help offset this lack of speedy connectivity, O2 have created an agreement with Wi-Fi provider Cloud to provide 7,500 free Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

In addition, you get unlimited EDGE data for a fixed monthly tariff of £35 (other tariffs of £45 and £55 a month are also on offer, and feature more free minutes and free texts), so at least you don’t have to worry about paying for the content you download.

However, there is, of course, a catch…

3G iPhone announcement “expected imminently”

Apple iPhone mobile phone

More 3G iPhone rumours doing the rounds, this time from wireless chip and DSP sector analyst Will Strauss of Forward Concepts.

Strauss is convinced that Apple are working on a 3G iPhone, and expects it to be announced at the same time that Apple announces which operator it has chosen for the iPhone in each European country in which it will be sold. According to EETimes, this announcement “…is expected imminently, and could come as soon as this week.”

Why wait for the iPhone, though, when you can get the same user interface in the Apple iPod Touch, which is out now and much cheaper.

More details after the jump.

Stream your iPhone’s music with the iPort media streamer

If you’ve just bought a new iPhone and have $200 in your pocket that’s burning a hole, you could do worse than buy the new iPort media streamer.

This will house your iPhone (or iPod, for that matter), and let you control it no matter where you are in your house – assuming you have your home fully networked, of course!

Conveniently, the price is a mere $200, which is exactly the amount that the iPhone was reduced in price by…uncanny!

Is that a 16GB HSDPA iPhone in your pocket?…

Strong rumours have emerged of the spec for the European iPhone. The US version, if you recall, looks fantastic, but the deal breaker is the lack of 3G. Now this might not be too much of a problem in the US, where 3G isn’t exactly ubiquitous, but in Europe, it’s a serious flaw, as we have smartphones that really are smart, as opposed to Motorola Qs.

Using a Web browser over a crawling GPRS or EDGE connection is not a pleasant experience, no matter how fancy the user interface.

All this might change for the European version, though, with rumours predicting a 16GB iPhone being released onto an unsuspecting public, with HSDPA connectivity.

More details after the jump.

Apple drop iPhone price by $200

In a move destined to royally annoy countless iPhone fans, and give un-needed ammunition to the already-smug “told you so” group of doubters, Apple have knocked a whopping $200 off the price of the iPhone in the US.

For people who’ve yet to buy one, this is, of course, great news, but it’s not exactly a great way of rewarding the thousands who spent days queueing in all weathers to get their hands on one when it launched.

World’s longest iPhone review

OK, more iPhone news, but I promise to keep it short! Gizmodo have produced what must be the world’s longest iPhone review, compiling thousands of words from hundreds of posts and throwing in their own opinion after using the phone exhaustively for the past week or so.

So if you want to know all about the iPhone (and I do mean all about it – even the name of the companies that make all the semiconductors that power the thing!), go check out their iPhone review now.

UK iPhone heading for O2

At last, the iPhone hype is starting to down, and other news is starting to emerge! Having sold a rumoured 700,000 iPhones in the past 5 days, Apple are clearly pleased with themselves over the iPhone’s launch. Not only was it the fastest selling mobile phone ever, it was also the fastest selling consumer electronics device ever. Now that’s some going!

Looks like the hype machine really worked for Apple.

Before we leave the iPhone (at last!), though, a final word on which network operator will get it in the UK. After reports a few days ago suggesting it was going to be Vodafone, it now transpires that O2 has beaten the other UK mobile operators to it.

Whereas the other rumours were based on speculation from various files that were found hidden deep within the iPhone, this new report comes from none other than The Times, which is arguably a little more authoritative!

Charting the iPhone hype

iPhone hype trend chart 2

Remember two days ago when I published the BlogPulse Trends chart showing how many people were blogging about the iPhone? That was before the iPhone was released, but showed the trend just about to jump into the stratosphere.

Fast-forward two days, and look at it now (above) – well and truly in the stratosphere! All other mobile phone companies have been left for dust.

I also talked about how Motorola were nuts in releasing their Motorola Z8 at the same time as the iPhone, and this graph proves it. You can see how high the iPhone trend line is (blue) – and the Motorola trend line (green)? Flat. Completely and utterly dead. If Motorola wanted any column inches on their Z8, they reallty should have picked a better day…come to think of it, they really should have picked any other day!
