Android and WinMo Garmin-Asus Nuvifones surface

Garmin-Asus have announced not one but two new smartphones – the Garmin-Asus Nuvifone A50 and Nuvifone M10 – both of which should be on display at MWC 2010 next week.

The Nuvifone A50 runs on Android while the Nuvifone M10 is a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 phone. Both are touchscreen smartphones, and, as you’d expect from Garmin, they both focus primarily on navigation.

That said, virtually all smartphones comewith GPS and some form of mapping software these days. So what do the Garmin-Asus Nuvifones offer that you can’t get with, say, any other Android smartphone, and why has Garmin gone to all the trouble of building its own phone?…

Nokia X6 review – the perfect mix of smartphone and music phone?

I didn’t think I’d be writing a Nokia X6 review so soon after its announcement, but Nokia have obviously been working furiously to get their flagship music phone out in the shops in double quick time!

Is the Nokia X6 worth buying though? Is it a better music phone than other music phones on the market, and how good is it compared to other Nokia phones?

Garmin working on Android phone

Garmin have announced that they’re working on an Android-based GPS smartphone for 2010.

Garmin entered the mobile phone market a while back with its much-delayed Nuvifone. Unfortunately, the delay meant that Garmin missed the boat somewhat with GPS phones, with first Nokia and then Google stealing a march on the company with a plethora of GPS-based phones that all worked rather well.

More details after the jump.

LG BL40 Chocolate review – a phone to end boredom permanently

The LG BL40 Chocolate phone in this review could one day save your life (assuming being bored to death can genuinely happen!)

Remember the last time you were in a hotel room with absolutely nothing to do? Crap TV in a foreign language, or films so expensive they cost more than the price of the room. Or what about the time you were on a train that slowed to a crawl…for seemingly hours on end?

We’ve all been in situations where we’ve cried out for something interesting to do.

Sometimes you need something to keep you entertained – a comedy, a film, even all 24 episodes of 24, anything to ease your stressed out, overloaded, or just plain bored brain!

LG must have thought that too, as they’ve just released the LG BL40 Cinematic phone – and blimey does it blow away the boredom blues!

Motorola Cliq and Dext take Android to the next level

Motorola have come out all guns blazing by announcing the first batch of what will be dozens of new Android phones. The Motorola DEXT and CLIQ are the first Android phones developed by Motorola, and will feature an innovative new way of integrating all your messages, emails, pictures and other forms of communication with your social media connections.

They’ll also feature MotoBlur – Motorola’s new user interface that takes Android to the next level.

Motorola aren’t seeing the two new phones as make or break – although they’re perilously close to going to the wall – but rather they’re the start of a brand new range of Android phones, which together will seal the future of Motorola’s strategy – and its overall fate.

Are the new Motorola Android devices good enough to save Motorola? Read on for more details!

Turn your old HTC Touch into an HTC Hero for free

Android on Windows Mobile

Remember the HTC Touch Dual, one of the first Windows Mobile smartphones that actually looked good? The keywords here are “Windows Mobile”, as it turns out you can also run Android on it, too – and not just any old Android, but a version of Android with HTC’s own shiny new Hero interface.

These pics show just such a weird chimera, with the HTC Touch Dual booting up under Linux and then the familiar HTC Hero interface bursting into life.

Impossible? No, not a bit of it. It’s one of the benefits of the openness of Android, the hackability of HTC’s phones, and the almost obsessive devotion to getting Android on virtually every device out there by the members of XDA-Developers.

Sure, it sounds geeky, but if you have an old HTC Touch and want to put some extra life into it, go ahead and install Android on it – jusrt don’t ask me how ;)

More pics and details after the jump.

New LG BL40 Chocolate phone goes king size

LG have announced a brand new top-end LG Chocolate phone that can only be described as king size! The LG BL40 Chocolate features a whopping 4.0″ screen with a huge 800 x 345 resolution.

All that screen real estate means you can feature a lot – and I mean a lot! – of icons on the homescreen, which LG have gleefully done.

Question is, though – is it too big? Read on to find out…

HTC Hero Review – nearly almost the perfect Android

Time, at last, for an HTC Hero Review round-up. After working feverishly on the new look MobileMentalism for what seems like the past 100 years (still not finished – give me time, people, it’ll be worth the wait ;), I remembered that I said I’d do a review of HTC’s brand new Android phone, the Hero. So here it is!

For those who don’t know, the Hero is the latest Android phone from HTC, who’ve so far not only taken the lead, but seemingly cornered the market in Android phones. The Hero has been long awaited by tech lovers as its the first Android phone with a heavily-customized user interface and might, just might, actually beat the iPhone in terms of overall user interface.

So the question is: does it? Read on to find out!

How to install the HTC Hero interface on the G1

The HTC Hero is a brand new Android phone that’s received all manner of awards as best mobile phone of 2009 (read our HTC Hero review for full details). One of the best features about the Hero is the fact that it has a brand new user interface – called Rosie, of all things! Rosie has bee developed by HTC to help it differentiate its Android phones from the myriad competitors that are now appearing.

The new user interface has been designed from the ground up to give Android a super-slick polished look. It’s not just a port of HTC’s TouchFLO user interface that it created for Windows Mobile. It’s a brand new dedicated Android interface that looks super-slick, has a nifty new Web browser and great new music player, among many many other enhancements.

But what if you’ve already got a T-Mobile G1 with the “vanilla” Android user interface? Are you forced to watch your HTC Hero-sporting friend gloat over the greatness of his new phone’s UI while you’re stuck with your G1’s UI for the next year or so?

Fear not. If you’ve got the technical chops, patience, and balls of steel, you too can port the HTC Hero’s user interface over to your T-Mobile G1. Be warned – it’s not easy!

But it can be done, and my brother Dave (@terminal7) has proved it by successfully upgrading his G1. You can see the pics he took of his new Hero G1, plus videos and details on how to do it after the jump.

8 megapixel LG Viewty Smart preview

LG have officially announced the new LG Viewty Smart, a brand new upgrade to the 6+ million selling LG Viewty cameraphone. The LG Viewty Smart (or the LG-GC900 to give it its official, and even worse, name!) is LG’s top-end camera phone, and has been designed to take on the high end camera phones of the other mobile phone manufacturers.

To that end, LG have equipped the Viewty Smart with an 8 megapixel camera, the same 3D touchscreen UI as the LG Arena, and some seriously impressive specs.

Check out the details of the LG Viewty Smart after the jump.
