Sony Ericsson kills Paris and BeiBei

Things really are being all shook up in the mobile phone world. Hot on the heels of Motorola splitting itself in two comes news that Sony Ericsson has canned two of its eagerly awaited smartphones – the Sony Ericsson P5i, codenamed Paris, and the Sony Ericsson G702 (codenamed BeiBei). These phones have been talked about and debated for months now, with people split on whether the liked the design or not.

Clearly the same debate was happening within Sony Ericsson, too, and those people who decided that the phones were not up to scratch won out and killed them. Fevered debate around the blogosphere speculates that the P5i was killed off because its feature-list was already behind that of its competitors even before it was released. This would be bad enough for a low-end phone, but for a smartphone, it’s techno-suicide!

However, that’s not all – the blogosphere itself may have had something to do with their decision…

Perfect pictures of the Sony Ericsson P5i Paris

Forgive the alliteration of the title, but new crystal clear pictures of the Sony Ericsson P5i (currently codenamed Paris) have been posted on the mobile-review forum. The launch date for the P5i isn’t known yet, but given the amount of leaks coming out of Sony Ericsson at the moment (for which I truly thank them for ;) and the finished looking quality of the phone, my guess would be…tomorrow!

There’s been a mixed reception to the P5i so far. On the one hand, its specification looks rather tasty. aGPS, 5 megapixel camera, and a boatload of other stuff as well (full spec after the jump). However, Gliatiotis, the mystery poster whose username sounds like a lethal version of bad breath, is not exactly raving about it:

“To be honest after seeing that there has been almost no changes at the hardware level, I am not that interested to play around with it and it will probably end up next to G700 and G900,” he says in his post, somewhat sullenly!

We’ll reserve judgment until the P5i is finally released. Meanwhile, check out the specs and more pics of the Sony Ericsson P5i after the jump.

More pics of the Sony Ericsson P5i

Heading this way real soon is the Sony Ericsson P5i, the latest in a long line of glorious Sony Ericsson smartphones. Still codenamed Paris, the P5i hasn’t yet been officially announced, but as these new pics show, it certainly won’t be long before it’s launched in blaze of hype.

It looks superb, despite the fact it’s got one of those annoying rocker-style keypads first seen on the M600i. It’s features aren’t too shabby, either, with touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WayFinder 7.0 software, and a weather application as well.

Leaked pics of Sony Ericsson P5i smartphone

While Sony Ericsson are busy teasing us with the specs of their forthcoming XPERIA X1 smartphone, they’re also working quietly on another smartphone currently codenamed the Sony Ericsson Paris. The phone will probably be called the P5i when it’s launched, and comes with some serious firepower.

For starters, it’ll have a touchscreen (which is par for the course these days), together witha 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WayFinder 7.0 software, and a curious weather application as well. From the sounds of it, this will give you a heads-up on what the weather will be doing where you now, by combining your current position with an online weather service.
